Cyberattack Disrupts Japan Airlines, Delays Holiday Flights
Japan Airlines (JAL) fell victim to a cyberattack, causing significant disruptions to its flight schedule right at the peak of the year-end holiday travel season. The attack, which commenced early on December 26, 2024, targeted network equipment, leading to malfunctions in systems that connect JAL's internal and external operations.
The airline confirmed that the cyberattack was a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack, where the system was overwhelmed by excessive data traffic, causing delays in more than 20 domestic flights. JAL acted swiftly, identifying the issue and restoring its systems; by late morning, they had managed to resume normal operations, including ticket sales for both domestic and international flights.
No customer data was compromised, and flight safety was not endangered during the incident. However, the disruption underscored the vulnerabilities in Japan's cybersecurity infrastructure, a concern echoed by experts who have long warned about such risks, especially as Japan enhances its defense capabilities and collaborates more closely with nations having stronger cyber defenses.
JAL's network issues also impacted other services, like baggage check-ins, causing further inconvenience to holiday travelers. The Japanese government, through its transport ministry, urged JAL to expedite system recovery and support affected passengers.
This cyber incident joins a series of similar attacks on Japanese institutions, highlighting the need for robust cybersecurity measures in critical sectors like aviation.
